Overfished areas
People use to fish in the areas closest to home but as technology has improved and areas closest to land have been fished out the industry has moved further mout to sea, seeking more fish. The search for certain types of fish lead the industry into certain areas, ie. Tuna in the eastern Pacific Ocean who are hunted by Japanese long liners whose catch rate is considered unsustainable.
Currently Antartica is under threat as the importance of krill in various markets increases. Coral reefs are collapsing worldwide.
The Coast of Ghana is probably the most overfished area in the world and fish use to be the staple food of more than 10 million people that live within 100kms of the coast. With fish limited the villages turned to the wildlife parks for game to maintain a source of protein.
The North Sea of Europe is another very good example of the outcomes of overfishing.
